Diamond Bessie Show

THE SAGA OF DIAMOND BESSIE -
A TALE OF LOVE AND MURDER

OVERVIEW OF THE SHOW

Diamond Bessie was an infamous actress and prostitute who was murdered by her paramour husband - Abe Rothschild - in Jefferson, TX in 1877 while she was carrying their first child. He killed her to steal the last of her diamonds to settle gambling debts and continue his reckless and hedonistic lifestyle. This solo performance portrays her life from the earlier - and happier - years to her final tragic ending. And perhaps even beyond.

Note: This Performance Is For Adults Only Due To the Mature Content.

TESTIMONIAL

Susi did an excellent job! She is a real asset to your program. She knows her subject well and puts her whole self and soul into the performance. Everyone really enjoyed the show.

- Lincoln County Historical Society

This one-woman show written and
performed by Susi Wolf is an
exploration into societal conditions
and may challenge our perception
about those women whose life
circumstances differ from our own.
The dramatic performance lasts
approximately 45 minutes and is followed by a Q&A with Diamond Bessie in character. Susi Wolf then comes forth as herself to answer further audience questions.

The Chautauqua character of Diamond Bessie is played by Susi Wolf and the heroine is portrayed as a “ghost” telling the story of her life and death. It takes place in a small theater dressing room backstage. It is predictable that Diamond Bessie's spirit would frequent such an environment as her acting career onstage was probably where she was the happiest.

SUSI WOLF
LIFE COACH AND HEALER

I am excited to present this fascinating character known as Diamond Bessie. I have done extensive research about her colorful life as an actress and prostitute and have a deep personal commitment in sharing her story. She is a fascinating study of the human condition and possesses an indelible spirit.

Hers is a cautionary tale and as germane today as it was during the 19th century. I specialize as a therapeutic storyteller, intuitive healer and life coach and have worked with women for years who live life on the edge (drugs, prostitution, abuse, domestic violence shelters, etc.).

Over the years in my therapeutic storytelling and healing work, I have counseled hundreds of girls and women in modern society who faced the same dilemma as Diamond Bessie. I have heard the stories of young women forced into prostitution from abuse and neglect. Their survival methods of turning to addiction and crime destroyed their lives. Hope seems lost unless they can regain a sense of possibility and accept the compassionate love they seek from those trained in helping them.

“The saddest reason were those women who were seduced by a cad and lost her virginity, or were raped. At the time, these women were seen as ‘lost’ and there was no hope for them, virtually forcing them into prostitution.”

Quote From Legends of America, The Painted Ladies of Deadwood Gulch

As with Diamond Bessie, our society is prone to judgment. We are quick to point out the “sins” and slow to offer true resolution or support. Perhaps seeing this character portrayed will be a lesson in compassion for us all.

I adore Diamond Bessie and have told her story for years. I want the world to know she was not what they said she was. No one ever is.

The prostitutes of the Old West were sometimes called Upstairs Girls, Soiled Doves, Daughters of Joy or worse. As you can imagine, this profession was not a preferred choice by women of all ages, from young girls to much older women; but rather they engaged in the “oldest profession in the world” and succumbed to a life of "sin" for simple economic reasons. There were few jobs that a woman could pursue to gain financial independence and many women, more than most people realize, engaged in sex for pay in order to feed themselves or their families if they were unmarried, widowed, and poor. Due to the horrors and violence that accompanied being a prostitute, alcoholism and drug addiction were rampant among the working women. Venereal disease was epidemic. The rate of suicide among prostitutes was very high—10 times the national average.
